New-build crematorium located on a 5.4-hectare greenfield site on the south‑east edge of Leeds. The project provides a modern, dignified and culturally inclusive crematorium facility, carefully integrated into a sensitive rural fringe landscape with nearby heritage assets and public rights of way.
The scheme includes a single-storey crematorium building with a 110-seat chapel, witnessed cremation viewing gallery, port cochère, memorial gardens, woodland walks, service yard, car parking and integrated Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). The design is shaped by the site’s natural topography, allowing the building to be partially set into the landscape to minimise visual impact and enhance environmental performance.
The architectural approach promotes a calm, humane and welcoming environment, prioritising pedestrian experience and ceremonial dignity. The chapel is orientated to maximise views across the landscaped setting and accommodate a wide range of cultural and religious practices, including Sikh and Hindu funeral rites. A clear public/private hierarchy and one-way circulation strategy enhance privacy, operational efficiency and user experience.
The project integrates a strong sustainability strategy, including fabric-first design, green roofs, biodiversity net gain, PV provision, EV charging, passive solar orientation and heat recovery from cremator abatement systems.
