This project for Ayrshire Housing provided social housing to meet the pressing need for family housing in the area and is in a prominent location at the south-end of Girvan.
The site has an exposed coastal location and the design was developed from the idea of a protective sea wall enclosing a safe landscaped garden area. The heart forms a “solar courtyard”, with all dwellings being dual-aspect and receiving direct sunlight throughout the day. The three storey “keep” provides a landmark and has hidden balcony decks to the rear to provide pleasant sitting areas in the lea of the wind.
The development takes advantage of the fine views to Ailsa Craig and to the inland hills.
The project was used to illustrate the aspirations of Architecture + Design Scotland for Creating Sustainable Communities in their Annual Report entitled “Design Matters”.
