This modest 80 square metre house makes use of a site in the countryside which has no electricity or gas supply. Planning Permission has been obtained for the house plus a 5m freestanding wind turbine to suit the electrical loadings.
A passive solar strategy provides extensive glazing to the south, with north facing windows minimised. Superinsulation reduces heat losses, and the south facing glazed screen also has insulated external shutters which can be closed in very cold weather to reduce heat losses further.
Heating is provided by a wood burning stove. The hot water cylinder has three heat sources, namely a loop from the wood burning stove, a loop to solar panels, and an immerser connected to the wind turbine to allow any excess electricity to heat water when the batteries are fully charged.
